The Charles R. Foley Jr.-Gilmartin Foundation has been established by Sharon  Gilmartin of Sandwich, MA to offer assistance and support to any family  caring for a child with cancer.

In 2005 her son Charles was diagnosed with Medulloblastoma, the most common malignant central nervous system tumor of childhood. It accounts for 15-20 percent of pediatric brain tumors. Charles spent four and a half years in and out of the hospital, bravely enduring chemotherapy, radiation, numerous surgeries, stem cell transplant, and a month-long stay in Intensive Care. Despite the efforts of his dedicated team of doctors at Children’s Hospital and Dana Farber Cancer Institute in Boston, Charles lost his battle with the disease on November 22, 2009, after a long, courageous fight, just shy of his 15th birthday.

As devastating as Charles’ passing has been to his parents and his family, it has not stopped them from wanting to help others who may just be starting down the same path they were on not so long ago. “When caring for a child with cancer, families should not have to worry about the cost of food, gas, transportation, parking, prescriptions, and medical bills. In many instances there is only one income because a parent or guardian has had to stop working or has lost their job, because so much of their time is spent as a full-time caregiver. Our foundation will be there to help with anything a family may need, including assistance with government resources” says Charles’ Mother, Sharon. “We just want to make things a little easier, and carry on Charles’ legacy. He really wanted to help other families who are walking in the same shoes.”

In addition, the Gilmartin Family plans to support Pediatric Cancer Research.
